Role: To preserve the Credit Union’s assets by controlling delinquent accounts, collecting delinquent loan payments and/or recovering collateral; hiring, scheduling, training, and monitoring the work of other Collectors; disposing of repossessed collateral.

Essential Functions & Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement effective collections strategies and procedures to maximize debt recovery while maintaining positive customer relationships.
  • Must have the discipline and knowledge on when to refer accounts(s) to attorney for legal action.
  • Knowledge of bankruptcy workings: must have knowledge to file proof of claim and negotiate with attorneys when called for.
  • Contacts delinquent accounts by phone and mail; takes appropriate action to bring current.
  • Arranges the sale of repossessed collateral; determines additional investment to be made in collateral.
  • Analyzes financial situation of delinquent borrowers; takes action to repossess collateral when arrangements to bring the loan current are unsuccessful.
  • Testifies at legal proceedings as required.
  • Informs management of trends in loan underwriting contributing to delinquent/charged-off loans.
  • Other related duties as assigned.

Performance Measurements:

  • Maximize the collection and/or recovery of Credit Union assets from delinquent and charged-off accounts.
  • Ensure all collection activity is legal and follows credit union policy. To keep management informed of operational issues affecting the credit union's collection activities.
  • Maintain the credit unions charged-off and delinquent accounts at or below acceptable levels.
  • Provide friendly, professional, and accurate service and support to all members and associates.
  • To note observations of employee performance into appropriate reporting tool, as well as give to and receive feedback from employee on the same no later than XX working days following each quarter.
  • Develop recommendations for cost efficiencies and enhancements to products, pricing, and processes by monitoring trends in operations and deposit services.

Knowledge and Skills:

Experience: Five years of similar or related experience.

Education: A high school education or GED.

Interpersonal Skills: A significant level of trust and diplomacy is required, in addition to normal courtesy and tact. Work involves extensive personal contact with others and/or is usually of a personal or sensitive nature. Work may involve motivating or influencing others. Outside contacts become important and fostering sound relationships with other entities (companies and/or individuals) becomes necessary.

Other Skills: Knowledge of collection laws and regulations. Excellent communication, negotiation, and problem-solving skills. Able to work independently and manage multiple tasks. Strong organizational and time management skills. Proficient in Microsoft Office.
